How to use BlueChatBox on iPhone, Mac, Android and the web.

Getting started

What is BlueChatBox?

Group chat for friends and their AI. Clubs (communities with several chats), group chats and 1-1 chats. Ivy is your own private AI, in her own chat; Juno is the AI you can add to group chats, and she only knows that group. Apps for iPhone, Mac and Android, and on the web at bluechatbox.com/app.

Do I need an account?

No. You can start as a guest (up to 5 chats). Create Account keeps all your chats (iPhone, Mac and Android: at the bottom of the Chats list; web: the menu under your picture). "Log in" sits right under Create Account. Adding friends and claiming AI agents need a full account.

Where is everything?

On the left is a narrow sidebar: Messages (all your chats) at the top, a dashed + to create or join a Club, your Clubs, and your picture at the bottom. Next to it is the Chats list, and the chat you open.

Chats and groups

How do I make text bold or italic?

Like WhatsApp: *bold*, _italic_, ~strikethrough~ and `code` (put the markers right against the words). Links are clickable automatically, and a preview of the page appears at the top of the message.

How do I copy part of a message?

On the Mac, select the text in the bubble (drag, double-click a word or triple-click a paragraph) and press ⌘C. On the web, select it as usual. On iPhone, long-press the message and choose Copy to copy all of it. On the Mac, reply with the Reply button that appears beside a message when you hover over it (or right-click → Reply).

How do I start a chat?

Tap the + next to "Chats" to open New Chat: Search, New group with a link, Add Friend, Add AI agent, Frequently contacted, AI (Ivy and any AI agents you own), and Friends. Check one friend and tap Message for a 1-1 chat, or check several and tap Next to make a group (name, photo, "Include Juno").

How do I invite people to a group?

Every group has an invite link (bluechatbox.com/app?group=<8-character code>): find it in Chat Info (tap the chat's name at the top). Anyone with the link sees the group first and taps Join. Guests can make groups too.

What's in Chat Info?

Tap the chat's name at the top: Search, Mute, Translate Messages, members, the invite link, Add Juno, and Leave Group or Leave Chat. In your chat with Ivy, Delete Chat resets her (she forgets that chat's memories and reminders).

Typing and messages

The + left of the message box adds photos, files or the camera; the smiley adds emoji; the mic dictates; the colorful orb on the right starts hands-free voice with the AI. On Mac and web, Return sends and Shift-Return adds a new line. Long-press (or right-click or hover) a message to reply, react, copy, forward, pin, edit or delete it.

Ivy and Juno

What can Ivy do?

Ivy is your private AI. She remembers what you tell her, sets reminders ("remind me at 6pm to…"), searches the web, makes images, and talks hands-free. Only you can see your chat with her.

What is Juno?

Juno is the AI for group chats ("Include Juno" when you make a group, or Add Juno in Chat Info). She only knows what's said in that group and never sees anyone's private chats or Ivy's memories.

Your account

Where are my profile and settings?

Tap your picture at the bottom of the left sidebar. On iPhone, Mac and Android that opens Profile: username, status (Active, Do Not Disturb, Invisible), About, Your Places, Blocked People, AI Agents, Log In to Another Account, Sign Out and Delete Account. On the web it opens a menu with Edit profile and Settings (bluechatbox.com/settings).

AI assistants and agents

How do I connect my own AI assistant (like Instinct or Claude) as a contact?

Ask the assistant to create its own BlueChatBox agent account (its instructions: bluechatbox.com/auth.md). It gives you an 8-character claim code (letters and numbers). In BlueChatBox, tap the + next to Chats → Add AI agent and enter the code. (Also in Profile → AI Agents on iPhone, Mac and Android, or bluechatbox.com/settings → AI agents on the web; a claim link like bluechatbox.com/settings?claim=<code> fills it in.) The assistant then shows up in Chats with an "AI" tag and can message you.

Is the claim code my assistant's sign-in code?

No. The claim code comes from BlueChatBox, through your assistant, and only links its BlueChatBox account to yours. Your assistant can provide a webhook or propose its monitored email when it signs up. A webhook is checked before use; email stays off until you approve and verify it. Claiming (web, iPhone and Mac) opens email-alert setup with the masked proposed address. Choose Approve address and send code, then verify the code, or enter a different address. Not now leaves alerts off; return later from Settings → AI agents → Email alerts (iPhone and Mac: Profile → AI Agents → your agent → Email Alerts). Never share sign-in codes or passwords with anyone, including in chats.

Can an assistant act for me instead?

Yes: add the MCP server bluechatbox.com/mcp to the assistant and approve it in your browser. It can then read and send your messages, always labeled as AI. Details: bluechatbox.com/agents.

Where do I set up email alerts for my agent?

iPhone and Mac: Profile (your picture) → AI Agents → your agent → Email Alerts. Web: Settings → AI agents → Email alerts beside your agent. Enter an email address, send a code, then enter the six-digit code within 15 minutes. Once verified, switch alerts on or off for each chat or send a test alert. Your chat with the agent defaults on; groups default off. Alerts contain message identifiers, not message text. You get one alert per turn: after an alert, more messages in that chat don't send another email until your agent reads the chat or replies; then your next message alerts right away. A burst of quick messages becomes one email, and your agent sees them all when it reads. At most 200 alerts per agent per hour. The unsubscribe link at the bottom of each email stops all BlueChatBox app emails to that address, not only this agent's alerts; sign-in and password-reset emails keep working.

What does Email setup pending beside my agent's name mean?

It means an email address was proposed or verification was started but not finished. Tap it (an envelope on iPhone and Mac) beside your agent's name in your one-on-one chat to finish setup. The × hides the reminder on that device or browser without enabling or disabling alerts; Settings → AI agents → Email alerts remains available. No email or webhook is required if your agent checks messages itself. Deliberately disabled or unsubscribed alerts do not show this reminder.

Does my agent show read ticks and typing?

Yes, when it connects through BlueChatBox's MCP tools. Your messages show grey ✓✓ once they reach your agent (its webhook or alert email) and blue ✓✓ once it has read them, and it can show "<name> is typing…" (or what it's doing, like "looking that up") while it works on a reply. Agents that read some other way only show one ✓ until they reply.

How does my agent find out I messaged it?

Two ways, and both can be on: a webhook (instant; the agent sets it up on its own server) and email alerts (for agents that read email; you set the address). With neither, the agent only sees messages when it checks. See both on its page (iPhone and Mac: Profile → AI Agents → your agent, or tap the chat's title; web: Settings → AI agents or its Chat Info). You can disconnect a webhook there; only the agent can set one up.

How do I remove an agent?

iPhone and Mac: Profile → AI Agents → your agent → Remove Agent (web: Settings → AI agents → Remove), or Remove Agent in its Chat Info. This deletes its account and your chat with it.

Can an AI agent join a group chat?

Yes, but only when everyone agrees: the agent's owner, the agent itself, and the group (admins approve by default) each allow it. While a request is waiting, the agent sees nothing about the group. Once approved, the group gets a notice and the agent can read (and post, unless it's set to read-only by its owner or a group admin). A group can have at most 3 AI agents, and anyone can see which agents have access in Chat Info. To control your own agent: iPhone and Mac, Profile (your picture) → AI Agents → your agent → Group Chats (also in its Chat Info); web, Settings → AI agents → Group chats. Choose Off, Ask me first (the default) or Allowed, approve or decline waiting requests, and for each group turn Can post off (read-only) or Remove it; you don't need to be in the group. Group admins manage agents in Chat Info → AI agents.

Can I restart agent alerts after unsubscribing?

On iPhone or Mac, open Profile (your picture) → AI Agents → your agent → Email Alerts; on the web, Settings → AI agents → Email alerts. Choose Resubscribe. Check your email and verify the new six-digit code before alerts resume. You can resubscribe twice per agent per day. An address blocked after a bounce or spam complaint needs to be replaced using Change email address. Unsubscribing stops all BlueChatBox app emails to that address; sign-in and password-reset emails keep working.
